HMS Brocklesby
Only two ships to date have carried the name HMS Brocklesby, a 1940 Hunt Class Destroyer and a
1982 Hunt Class Minesweeper. Both carried the same badge, and is now produced by us and
availble for you to buy - see below for a fine example of our HMS Brocklesby brass badge.
(This example of our HMS Brocklesby badge was painted blue as opposed to red at the request
of a customer - generally speaking any dark colour set the polished brass off nicely).
1940 Type 2 Hunt Class Destroyer
A Type 2 Hunt Class Destroyer, the first HMS Brocklesby was launched at Cammell Laird, Birkenhead on 30th September 1940.
During building, the breadth of this ship was increased to 31ft 6 inches due to poor stability results
of the inclining of HMS Atherstone, the first of the class. HMS Brocklesby, as with the other Hunt Class ships,
was designed to carry 6 x 4 inch in three twin mountings. This had to be reduced, however, to 4 x 4 inch, and
other weight saving measures were undertaken including the non fitting of a torpedo armament. Further development of
the class did allow some types to carry the full armament as designed.
HMS Brocklesby completed on the 9th of April 1941. There followed a busy war for her and her ships'
companies, operating in the escort role in the English Channel, and Atlantic and Mediterranean Seas, where she
gained six battle honours in the process.
After the second world war, HMS Brocklesby saw further service and included periods as an aircraft target
ship and an extended role as an asdic trials ship. Finally paying of on the 22nd of June 1963, this in itself
something of a record for an escort vessel built at the beginning of the 1939-1945 war.
1982 Hunt Class Minesweeper
The second ship to carry the name of HMS Brocklesby is the 1982 Hunt Class Minesweeper.
This class are almost twice the displacement of the Ton class and almost as big as the wartime
Algerines. They are similarly engined as the Ton class with Deltic diesels giving
approximately 16 knots.
